You may know that some months ago the manufacturers of the impotence drugs Cialis, Viagra and Levitra changed the labeling on their medications to warn men of the potential link between the use of these impotence medicines and Transient Amnesia. At the time the drug companies said that they were erring on the side of caution and that there had been no proven link between the two. They also pointed out that it was likely that the Transient Amnesia was caused by the sexual activity as opposed to the actual drugs.

A fascinating study done at the University Hospital of Puerta de Hierro in Spain adds growing weight to the evidence which shows that not only are men affected by this temporary amnesia after sexual intercourse but also women too. The researchers looked at six individual cases of amnesia which occurred in four men and two women all of whom were between the ages of 42 and 60. They said that while they could not actually pinpoint the precise mechanisms and processes which caused the sex and amnesia link they said that it was becoming increasingly common and therefore merited more study.
The research which was written up in the medical journal Revista de Neurologi noted that in most cases the amnesia would soon disappear and a patient would go back to normal and nothing further would need to be done. In all of the cases seen in Spain the patients had arrived in hospital between 30 minutes or two hours following sex. The amnesia periods lasted for between two and up to six hours with the patients feeling very disorientated and often asking the same questions again and again despite having been given satisfactory answers. This research is extremely important for the drug companies because it shows that it is unlikely that the drugs are causing the problem and that it is just a sexual activity.
It was also observed that this amnesia tends to occur in older people having sex and these people are considerably more likely to have been made use of erectile dysfunction medication. It could be argued therefore that drugs such as Viagra are allowing older people who are at risk from transient temporary amnesia to have sex and therefore are indirectly part of the problem. One possible hypothesis for the cause of the amnesia is that the vigorous sexual activity temporarily restricts the blood flow to the brain.
