The organisation, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals who are known for their audacious publicity stunts have just created another with their entry to a design competition launched by the New York City Department of Health. The competition centres around the most informative and eye catching design for free condoms which they are handing out as part of a campaign to promote safe sex and reduce the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases.

The New York City Department of Health brief for the design did point out that it should highlight the “distinctive culture and style” of the city while at the same time it should also promote safer sex. Critics of the PETA design noted that while it did promote safe sex it was more interested in promoting the message that eating meat could make you impotent. In fact in clear lettering on the PETA design it says that men who eat “broccoli over bratwurst” reduce their chances of suffering from cardio illnesses, cancer, diabetes and impotence.
The PETA advertisement which was designed by Emily McCoy points out that the fat found in animal foodstuffs like meat, eggs and dairy products clogs up the arteries. The major cause of erectile dysfunction is well known to be poor arterial health especially in the penile area.
The condom design competition which will be running until February will involve judges choosing some of the best designs and then the winner being chosen by the public in an online poll. There’s no question that excessive meat consumption can lead to higher levels of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure however it is also possible that people suffer from these complications by eating other fatty food stuffs other than meat. On the other hand vegetarian people tend to be healthier overall than people who eat meat so the jury is still out on this!
