Oxygen Deprivation From Sleep Apnea Is Cause Of Impotence

Ukmedix News has previously written about the connection between erectile dysfunction and men who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and now new research has come to light showing exactly how and why there is a link between the two conditions. The research done in America and led by Professor David Gozal from the University of Louisville shows that the connection between the medical conditions could be because of the chronic intermittent hypoxia or oxygen deprivation which sufferers of sleep apnea get when they don’t breathe well while asleep.

Oxygen Deprivation From Sleep Apnea Is Cause Of Impotence

The research which was done using laboratory mice involved exposing them to a lack of oxygen which is similar to the lack of oxygen that men suffering from sleep apnea experience. The results showed that the rate of spontaneous erections was 55 percent lower in this group of mice. Professor Gozal explained that even after short times of oxygen deprivation the number of erections was significantly lower.

After the research had continued for five weeks it was noted that the time interval between the mice mating with each other had increased 60 fold and that the likelihood of the mouse continuing to ejaculation was also significantly lower. In fact in five out of seven instances ejaculation did not happen at all. Interestingly however one mouse was not affected by the lack of oxygen, (Super Mouse?). The researchers noted that there was a big difference in how individual mice were affected by the lack of oxygen and this is similar to the effect that sleep apnea seems to have on men.

The researchers did further experiments involving the use of the erectile dysfunction medication Cialis along with oxygen deprivation. It was clear that the Cialis drug had a significant effect on improving erectile function with oxygen deprived mice which therefore would lead the researchers to believe that Cialis could be effective to help men suffering from sleep apnea related erectile dysfunction.

Interestingly the scientists also noted that the Cialis drug was not just effective for the physical aspects of erectile function but even seemed to have an effect on the “behavioural components” exhibited by the mice, which could mean that Cialis may play a part in the “central nervous system mechanisms” of sexual function.
