No Viagra, Cialis or Levitra For Sex Offenders

Irrespective of whether you were for or against the health care reform bill recently enacted by President Barack Obama in the US one benefit that may come out of it is that sex offenders will no longer be able to get impotence medication. This initiative was put in as a sensible amendment to the health bill by Senator Coburn. The amendment specifically prohibits private health plans from issuing prescriptions for Viagra, Cialis and Levitra to anybody who has been convicted in a court of rape, child molesting or any other sexual offences.

There have been quite a few cases over the last decade where convicted sex offenders were able to continue offending because they could get their hands on Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. There was understandable outrage not only in the US but also in the UK when ordinary people found out that taxpayer’s money was being used to fund criminal activity. Unfortunately for doctors in the US and the UK they were required by law to hand out prescriptions to the sex offenders and there was nothing they could do about it.
The reality is however that if sex offenders want to get their hands on Viagra they can do it pretty easily by purchasing illegal versions either over the internet or on back streets so this legislation is unlikely to actually restrict their access to it. However, what this legislation may do is make certain that the state and the taxpayer are not the people paying for it, and that only genuine cases of need are given the free erectile dysfunction drugs.
The U.S. health care reform bill primarily deals with extending coverage to more Americans especially those who are unable to purchase health insurance. It is hoped that the new legislation will mean that all Americans will get a decent standard of health care.
Ukmedix News Update: This ammendment did not make it through as a new vote would be required and Democrats did not want to risk the bill being stalled.
