If you read the nutritional information on the side of your cereal packet when you are having breakfast you might notice that it contains something called niacin. This compound has recently been the subject of an extensive study done by doctor that the Chinese University of Hong Kong who showed that it could have an important positive impact on reducing the likelihood of suffering from erectile dysfunction.

Dr Chi-Fai Ng who led the study looked at the impact of niacin on 169 men suffering from impotence and dyslipidemia. The men were divided into two groups one of whom received 1,500 milligrams of niacin everyday any other group who received a placebo. The study which was done for twelve weeks was evaluated using the questions 3 and 4 of the International Index of Erectile Function.
The results were clear that the men receiving the niacin had significantly improved International Index of Erectile Function scores when compared to the group who received the placebo. In fact the researchers concluded that niacin was particularly effective in improving the erectile function of men who suffered from moderate to severe erectile dysfunction and dyslipidemia. The impact on men suffering from mild erectile dysfunction was clinically insignificant.
The study which was published in full by the Journal of Sexual Medicine should make interesting reading and definitely merits further study. Scientists need to know exactly why the niacin improved erectile function and whether there is any potential clinical application for this compound in the treatment of impotence.
The study which was admittedly a small one needs to be expanded and cannot be taken too seriously because of the limited numbers of volunteers involve. The niacin was given to the Chinese University research team by Abbott Laboratory Limited. Ukmedix News will keep you up to date with any new erectile dysfunction research done with niacin.
