The research which was financed by Medtronic, who are developing penile stents showed an almost 70 percent improvement in erections three months after they were inserted surgically into the penile artery. The results also showed no adverse affects or health problems as a result of the surgery.

The new study which was made public at a meeting for the Vascular Interventional Advances recently held in Las Vegas involved stents being inserted into 30 men of an average age of 60 all of whom suffered from erectile dysfunction.

If this surgery can be shown to be effective and safe many men might opt to have it rather than rely on erectile dysfunction medication to boost their sexual function. There are millions of men worldwide who suffer from erectile dysfunction and the vast majority of it is caused by vascular problems in the penile arteries. The research on penile stents is still at a pretty early stage and it is probable that far more research will need to be done before they become an accepted and normal treatment for erectile dysfunction.
