A bicycle seat designer has warned about the standard design of traditional bike seats which can cause erectile dysfunction if used on a regular basis. Dr Roger Minkow who designs safe and healthy bike seats for the bicycle manufacturer Specialized warned that the penile artery that runs around the base of the spine right into the penis can be squashed when sitting on some bicycle saddles.

He also warned that a network of nerves is also present in the perineum area which is why sitting for a long time on a bike seat can actually cause the feeling of numbness which many cyclists talk about. There is absolutely no reason why bike riding should be uncomfortable and very slim bikes saddles should not be used at all.
At Ukmedix News we have written frequently about the dangers of uncomfortable bike saddles and have highlighted the need for regular bike riders to invest in specially designed saddles which are both comfortable and safe. The groin area in both men and women is not designed to carry your weight and when sitting down you should always make use of your buttocks.
Another bike expert, Dr Andy Pruitt also commented that it was a good thing for men to stand up on the pedals every five minutes to allow the blood to circulate properly.
Bike riders can develop permanent damage to their penile arteries if they are not careful and this will obviously lead to reduced erectile function. Ukmedix News has also reported on research that shows that men who operate heavy machinery like fork lift trucks also have considerably higher rates of erectile dysfunction which is likely to be caused by damaging vibrations to the penile area.
Men who ride motorbikes are also in a slightly higher risk category for erectile dysfunction and so it is essential that they always invest in very comfortable seats and do their best to minimise the vibrations.

Yep, that's why the Chinese population is shrinking - all those bike seats lowered the birthrate.
On the other hand, perhaps it's merely a clever marketing ploy.

The Telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/5517596/A-bike-to-be-seen-on.html had an article last week about a noseless saddle – the ECD Seat - that takes the pressure away from the perineum and the company website http://www.ecdsports.com/ has some good research into the effects of prolonged cycling using traditional saddles.
