a nine month prison sentence suspended for two years

A UK man was lucky to avoid prison after being pronounced guilty of selling the illegal impotence medication Kamagra. This medication which is not licenced for UK sale is one of the most commonly sold versions of counterfeit Viagra.

Mr. John Atkinson from Sutton Coldfield was given a nine month prison sentence suspended for two years after having pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. The Medicines and Health products Regulatory Agency who led the investigation against him impounded around 7,000 Kamagra pills, 2,000 Savitra pills (a rip off of Levitra), as well as a small amount of Apcalis pills (a rip off of Cialis). Other erectile dysfunction products in the form of oral jelly sachets were also seized and the estimated value of the haul was estimated to be over £50,000.

There have been calls for the laws concerning the illegal sale of medications to be made stricter and longer sentences and bigger fines to be enacted.  The MHRA is particularly keen to have the existing laws in the UK Medicines Act reviewed as part of their campaign to clamp down on counterfeit medication in the UK.

The counterfeit medication worldwide business has boomed since the arrival of the drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra because they are relatively easy to manufacture.  The profits from the sale of these fake medications however goes into funding other criminal activities such as gun running and even terrorist organizations have made use of internet sales of impotence medication to raise money fast.
