Another Study Links Heart Disease And Erectile Dysfunction

In yet another study looking into sexual function and cardio problems it has been shown that men who have erectile dysfunction could well be at a bigger risk of having other medical conditions such as cardio disease, diabetes and others.
The study done at the the New England Research Institute based in Massachusetts in America examined nearly 1000 men between the ages of 40 to 70 over a time frame of 15 years. They were especially vigilant to locate signs of metabolic syndrome that often precede heart disease and diabetes. They also were looking for high cholesterol levels, elevated blood sugar amounts and high blood pressure and obesity.
The researchers said that the study clearly showed among other things that men who had a healthy bodyweight and suffered from erectile dysfunction had a double chance of having metabolic syndrome.
Erectile dysfunction occurs for a number of reasons such as psychological factors or from a lack of blood flow to the penile artery caused by blocked up arteries and this study noted that erectile dysfunction was more prevalent in men who suffered from another medical condition like high cholesterol or diabetes even if they were of a normal weight.
Normally men who are thin were not thought to be at risk of erectile dysfunction and heart disease and the research highlights the fact that doctors should be asking patients more about other possible health complications when they say that they are suffering from impotence.
A spokesman for the Sexual Dysfunction Association explained that the study was showing that erectile dysfunction could be a more relevant signal of heart disease than say the more obvious signs of a beer belly.
