PDE-5's Do Not Affect Fertility

There have been rumors that the use of these drugs could impair fertility in men

An extensive research project has just finished that was designed to determine whether the use of PDE-5 inhibitors, (commonly known as erectile dysfunction medications Viagra, Cialis and Levitra) could have any effect on the semen quality of a man.

PDE-5

For this study the drugs Viagra and Levitra were used for a six month time period. The men were given either twenty mg of Levitra, a hundred milligrams of Viagra or a placebo tablet. The 200 men in the study where chosen randomly and some of them were suffering from erectile dysfunction and others had normal erectile function. The researchers were specifically looking for any altered semen characteristics and whether the reproductive hormones in men were affected.

There have been rumors that the use of these drugs could impair fertility in men but the results of this research with both the Viagra and the Levitra showed that there was no clinically significant change in semen quality at all.

The researchers also examined the amounts of reproductive hormones in the men and found that they were unchanged with both erectile dysfunction drugs. The researchers also evaluated sperm concentration, the number of sperm per ejaculation, as well as sperm morphology and motility and concluded that all were unaffected by the Viagra and Levitra. The men in the study varied in age from 25 to 64 and good clinical practice was followed by following a double blind, randomised and parallel group study conducted in different locations.

In reality erectile dysfunction drugs improve the fertility of a man because they improve his erectile function. Good erectile function leads to more sex which can therefore boost the chances of conceiving. A man who is unable to get an erection cannot procreate. The erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra have been responsible for tens of thousands of children all over the world.
