Nerve Surgery On The Penis Can Restore Erectile Function

New research shows that men who have impotency problems after suffering from prostrate cancer and undergoing treatment for it may be able to get some help from a surgical procedure involving the implant of nerve grafts directly onto the penis. The research that was unveiled by Dr. Secin and printed in The Journal of Urology involved detailed analysis of 44 men who had had prostate cancer and following its treatment had completely lost their erectile function and where thus deemed to be impotent. All the men did not respond to conventional erectile dysfunction medication.

The ground breaking surgery involves the transplant of the sural or the genitofemoral nerves and being placed directly into the penis to restore damaged nerves in that region. The researchers noted that they had more success when the genitofemoral nerve was used as opposed to the sural nerve.
The vast majority of the patients were able to achieve satisfactory erection after the surgery and the researchers feel that further research could be done in this regard. Of interest was that they felt that by using bilateral cavernous nerve grafts even better results could be achieved.
The majority of men who have had prostate surgery respond well to the PDE-5 inhibitors Viagra, Cialis or Levitra but sometimes the surgery that is done causes serious nerve damage that even erectile dysfunction drugs can’t remedy and thus this new type of nerve surgery is required.
Obviously this type of surgery is more drastic then popping an impotence pill and not all men would want to undergo the operation but if it means a choice between having your erectile function restored and living with impotence many men would jump at the chance to be cured.
Ukmedix will be looking out for more research and stories on this type of penile nerve surgery and will therefore keep you up to date with any new developments.
