Ukmedix has learnt that the EU organisation for the monitoring of health products namely the CHMP has issued a statement regarding the use of the three main prescription erectile dysfunction medications Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. The CHMP has given the recommedation that men who suffer from sight loss due to non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy or NAION for short must not use Viagra, Cialis or Levitra.
The CHMP in its statement also said that it will be informing the European Medicines Agency that it is their belief and recommendation that Viagra, Cialis and Levitra should be specifically contraindicated for NAION sufferers. Eye specialists had previously seen that in some rare cases permanent sight loss had occured as a result of using these erectile dysfunction medications.
The condition known as NAION happens as a result of the blood flow being cut off from the optic nerve causing tempory and sometimes even permanent vision loss. This condition is extremely rare and the incidences of men with this condition using Viagra and getting an attck of blindness are also rare but nevertheless in the interests of health and safety the EMA is being advised to make sure that doctors are aware of the possible side effects of prescribing these impotence medications
Pfizer, Eli Lilly and Bayer the makers of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra have had legal action taken against them with regard to this medical problem in America.
