New Research On Impotence And NAION

Written by Stuart Stevens | Thursday, 13 July 2006

Last year a number of research projects established the fact that there is a very small risk for men using the erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra of suffering from an eye condition NAION which stands for non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy. Various medical organisations and bodies warned men that there was this small but significant risk that could impede their sight temporarily or permanently.

However new research written in the British Journal of Ophthalmology and conducted at the University of Alabama in Birmingham USA says that men who have had or who are prone to heart attacks and who take the one of the trio of erectile dysfunction medicines Viagra Levitra or Cialis could be at higher risk for sight loss.

The study looked at in depth the relation between erectile dysfunction medicines and NAION and it was noted that there was a strong link between the use of Viagra Levitra or Cialis and NAION with men who had had a previous heart attack. The researchers also said that they had come across similar results with men who had hypertension but the biggest risk factor was heart attacks for NAION occurence. The researchers felt that anyone who had either hypertension or who had suffered a heart attack should be warned that there were dangers in using Viagra, Levitra and Cialis.

The American Urological Association in an extensive survey they conducted recently saw that 84% of erectile dysfunction sufferers and 98% of doctors thought that any new erectile dysfunction medications must have very few side effects. The survey also looked at attitudes to the length of time before erectile dysfunction medications should start working and doctors said that the impotence treatments should work within 33 minutes on average and patients said within 38 minutes on average.
