We have reported before that women in parts of India are allowed to cite the impotence of their husbands as a valid reasons for divorce. It appears however that as women are becoming more emancipated and confident in India they are using this reason far more often in family courts. For example one family court based in the district of Sundargarh over the last year has lodged over 200 individual petitions from women seeking divorce and over 40 percent of these cases claim the impotence of their husbands.

Commentators on social attitudes in India say that the big increase in the amount of women who are claiming their husbands are impotent shows that Indian women are becoming more sexually confident and thus place a much greater emphasis on the sexual physical performance of their men.
Other people say that the reason why there is this a big increase is due to the fact that Indian men in certain parts of the country are now placed under a great amount of stress and anxiety in the workplace which has been shown to greatly increase the chances of suffering from erectile dysfunction. There is also a greater consumption of alcohol and cigarettes which could be contributing to the problem too.
One particular divorce lawyer said that it was also becoming apparent that some women were not being completely honest and were using the impotence reason as a means of getting an easy divorce and to humiliate their husbands.
With the sales of drugs like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra the problem of erectile dysfunction is one that is not taboo to talk about anymore and thus women are becoming more educated about what they should get from their husbands sexually.
Men of the United Kingdom should be grateful that the law here does not automatically grant a divorce to a woman on the basis of erectile dysfunction.
