Ukmedix News is aware that it is common knowledge that men who have diabetes often suffer from erectile dysfunction. The UK charity called Diabetes UK has been analyzing the results of research that looked into the link between diabetic men and male infertility and has described been the situation as "alarming".

The research that was done at Queen's University based in Belfast looked at the sperm counts of 27 diabetic men who had an average age of thity-four years as well as men who didn't suffer from diabetes who had an average age of thity-three years, and they saw that the sperm DNA of the diabetic men consisted of much higher degrees of fragmentation of up to 52 percent compared to only 32 percent in the men who didn't suffer from diabetes. They also noted that there were more DNA deletions in energy generating cell structures known as mitochondria in scientific circles.
The worrying thing is that diabetes causes long term permanent damage to erectile function and fertility in diabetic men and even though they may receive treatment for their diabetes, the problem of erectile dysfunction can continue. The study shows that the problem is not just a physical problem but one which is occurring at a cellular level and affecting the DNA.
Diabetes UK said that they would welcome more research in this area as it could be put to good use and help men who suffer from erectile dysfunction as a symptom of diabetes. The PDE-5 inhibiting drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra have been known to help diabetic men who suffer from impotence but this research shows that over time the erectile dysfunction may get worse and eventually the use of erectile dysfunction drugs may not actually help them any more. Diabetic men are often overweight which only compounds the erectile dysfunction problem even more.
