Chinese Erectile Dysfunction Survey

Written by Stuart Stevens | Thursday, 10 August 2006

A new study undertaken in China has shown that around half of all Chinese men between the ages of 40 and 70 suffer from erectile dysfunction as well as another statistic that shows that around 10% of the Chinese adult male population having some form of erectile dysfunction. The survey that was carried out for the German drug company Bayer also noted that only one man in ten goes to get treatment for their erectile dysfunction problem. In all around 2,000 men of different ages between 20 and 75 were interviewed in some of China's big cities.

The survey authors noted that Chinese men were not very open when it came to discussing sexual issues and problems when compared to European and American men but they nevertheless did think that it was important to have satisfying sex and to give pleasue to their sexual partners. It was observed that for a Chinese man to go to see his doctor about an erectile dysfunction problem would be humiliating and embarassing for them.

In fact 37% of those interviewed said that they were simply too embarassed and shy to speak to a doctor about the problem and 16% said that they would not know what doctor to speak to. As many as 12% said that they just didn't believe in getting medication and treatment and 30% said that they would just wait for the erectile dysfunction to go away on its own. Sixty seven percent of men said that they would talk about their erectile dysfunction problem with their sexual partners.

The results show that there is a big erectile dysfunction problem in China and that Chinese men are not fully informed and open to discuss the problem. It has been shown that erectile dysfunction seriously impacts on the quality of life and general health of a man and also of his sexual partner.

The survey also looked into the treatments that Chinese men look to when they suffer from erectile dysfunction and it was noted that most Chinese men look for Western medications for the problem rather then relying on Chinese medicines. In fact it was seen that only 25% used traditional Chinese medicines compared to 60% who used Western medicine. Fifteen percent said that they used other treatments like spiritual and alternative remedies.
