The European Industry Commissioner, Dr Gunter Verheugen recently commented that the trade in counterfeit medication has now got to extremely dangerous proportions.  He specifically mentioned the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra as being one of the most counterfeited drugs but also noted that even cancer treatments and antibiotics were being manufactured by illegal organisations.

He explained that the EU had impounded almost 35 million fake drug tablets over the last 8 weeks and that they were concerned about what was happening and that more needed to be done to stop it. He mentioned other medications such as fake anti cholesterol drugs, malaria medications and analgesics. Dr Verheugen said that the manufacturing of fake drugs should be considered a very serious criminal act and the punishment should be severe.  He described every single instance of counterfeiting medication as a “potential massacre” and noted that substandard medication led to people dying.
