PT-141, The New Miracle Drug For Women Too

Written by Stuart Stevens | Wednesday, 03 May 2006 | There are 2 comments

Ukmedix is closely monitoring reports on the testing of a new libido boosting drug that could help not only men but women too with sexual dysfunction and low levels of desire. The drug which is administered in the form of a spray, has a codename PT-141 at present and its manufaturers have yet to give it a commercial name.

The drugs maker is Palatin Technologies an American company that is working to getting the all important Food and Drug Administration approval without which the drug has no commercial potential. PT-141 will be primarily aimed at men with erectile dysfunction problems which as Viagra has proved is a huge market. The company also hopes to get the FDA approval for the use of the drug with women and if it does it will be financial dynamite. Million of dollars are invested yearly into a cure for female sexual dysfunction (FSD) which is said to affect as many as half of all women at some point of their lives and Palatin may have finally come up with a result.

The company has high hopes of getting the drug onto the worldwide market in 3 years following the extensive testing that is required and to find out about the side effects (if any) that could be present with repeated use of the spray drug. In the limited testing done so far the results on sexual function are impressive with women reporting results in as little as fifteen minutes after using the nasal inhaler spray and most saying that they experienced a desire to have sex as well as sexual arousal.

The majority of the testing so far has been with men as this is the initial focus of the companies plan and the results are again looking good. The men reported as well as having a better sexual function that they even felt more energy and stamina in the bedroom with one participant even saying that he even felt younger. Where PT-141 differs from Viagra is that it actually heightens sexual desire whereas Viagra only increases sexual function and erection capabilities. Taking a Viagra pill doesn't actually make you want to have sex it just gives you a boost if you decide to; PT-141 makes you want to have sexual intercourse within 15 minutes.

The researchers who are organising the PT-141 trials say that the way that the drug works is not altogether clear but it is not a drug that boosts blood flow, but a drug that works on the brain and its signalling function. This is important because it actually effects the way we feel so it is more of a neurological drug than a physical drug and this could help men who have erectile dysfunction that is caused by pyschological reasons. Around 20% of all erectile dysfunction cases are due to mental reasons as opposed to physical problems.

There are certain other questions that need to be asked with regard to the PT-141. Could the drug be dangerous in the wrong hands and will it be possibly used irresponsibly by people who just want a quick sexual fix? Maybe the drug will become a nightclub drug with people selling a quick ix in shady corners or will it become a serious drug to help individuals who suffer from genuine FSD or erectile dysfunction.

There are concerns that Viagra is not only used by men who have erectile dysfunction but also by young men who just want to last longer in bed and who don't really need it. But then some people say that it is not a crime to want to boost your sexual stamina and if it can make a relationship more exciting than what is the problem. PT-141 is said to be long lasting as well as quick to work and could be carried in your pocket like a breath freshner spray. Testing also reveals that drinking and eating have no effect on the efficacy of PT-141 and so it would almost certainly be a seriously rival to Viagra. When and if PT-141 gets approval will all these questions be answered.
