The testing of PT-141 is moving ahead with the anouncement from Palatin Technologies and its partner King Pharmaceuticals that they have started the two phase IIB medical and clinical testing of the bremelanotide drug on men who suffer from erectile dysfunction. The erectile dysfunction drug PT-141 comes in the form of a spray that is very fast to act and could eventually be licenced for use in women as well as men.
At present the company is concentrating its efforts on getting the drug approved for men with erectile dysfunction and if this is successful then they will move forward with the testing in women. The limited testing already done on women has produced startling results and could be a real boost to women with female sexual dysfunction or FSD. It would also earn the company billions of dollars as there is a great demand for a drug that can really help with FSD.
The testing that is being done now is to determine safe and effective doses of the drug for the phase III clinical trials that should start in the beginning of next year. The PT-141 drugs main ingredient namely bremelanotide is a melanocortin agonist that effects the sexual triggers in the brain almost immediately on being inhaled and therefore would be a more instantaneous form of erectile dysfunction medication than say Viagra, Cialis and Levitra and this could be commercially very attractive.
Palatin Technologies and King Pharmaceuticals are hoping that the results of all its clinical trials will convince the FDA in the United States and the EMEA in the European Union that the drug is commercially safe and can be useful for men and eventually women with sexual dysfunction problems.
