Tempers are rising in Egypt after a recent Ministry of Health campaign to stop people smoking involved the use of an image of a drooping cigarette to symbolise the connection between smoking and impotence. The image which has been used on billboards as well as on individual cigarette packets sold in Egypt has angered some Egyptian men who say that the image is offensive.

Egypt which is a male dominated society is not tolerant to public references to sex even if they are in the name of good health. The image of the drooping cigarette is accompanied by the words “smoking will affect marital relations”.
In Egypt men like to shield their women from all references to sex and many men said that they would not let their mothers, wives or sisters see the cigarette warnings. In fact some Egyptian men even questioned whether there was any truth in the link between smoking and erectile dysfunction. The good news however is that the majority of men believed that the link was a real one. Interestingly while the majority of the Egyptian men understood that smoking had health implications many of them had never previously realised the connection to suffering from impotence.
In fact the link has been proved in many different clinical tests and smoking is arguably the most dangerous threat to a good sex life as you get older. Another thing which we are aware of at Ukmedix News is that highlighting the link between smoking and impotence is a very powerful way of making men sit up and do something about the unhealthy habit. Warning men that smoking can cause heart disease or lung cancer has less of an effect than warning them that it can cause erection problems even though the previous two illnesses are far more serious.
Smoking in Egypt is very much part of their culture and it is possible to smoke in a restaurant, in the cinema or even in the doctor’s waiting room despite recently enacted smoking bans in public places. Trying to get Egypt smoke free is going to be no mean feat and shock tactics like the drooping cigarette will be essential for good results. It is still perfectly socially acceptable to smoke in Egypt and until this attitude is reversed the Ministry of Health will be facing an uphill battle.
