We’ve published plenty of research regarding the link between erectile dysfunction and regular bicycle use and now an extensive new study has gone further and has shed much more light on the problem. The study which was done by analysing over 1,700 volunteers taking part in the Massachusetts Male Aging Study saw that the more time spent cycling the greater the likelihood of problems with erections.

The study saw for example that if you cycled for less than three hours a week you had nothing to worry about and in fact an occasional bike ride actually improved erectile function, [this is pretty obviously because of the sexual health benefits of regular exercise]. However when the cycling went over the three hour limit per week the risk of erectile dysfunction was increased by 72 percent over and above what would normally be considered normal for the age of the cyclist.
Professor Irwin Goldstein believes that all men will eventually suffer from erectile problems if they cycle for a long time on a regular basis. He said that they would either be suffering from erection problem now or they would do so in the future. Sitting on a bicycle seat reduces the blood flow through the perineum which contains the all important penile artery and therefore regular cycling may permanently damage it. If you ever feel a numb sensation in the pelvic region after cycling you should be investing in a comfortable new bicycle seat which does not put pressure on the perineum. One study done even shows that uncomfortable bicycle seats can cause arteriosclerosis in the penile artery despite the rest of the arteries being healthy from regular good exercise.
Don’t think it is just men who suffer because women need good blood flow in the perineum region in order to fully enjoy sex and therefore they should be careful with their bicycle seats too. Basically the thin racing type of bicycle seat should be consigned to the bin and you should only use ‘erectile function friendly’ seats which put all the pressure on the buttocks and not on the sensitive bit in between.
