Avanafil Undergoing More Phase 3 Tests

VIVUS, a pharmaceutical company which is developing a new erectile dysfunction remedy called avanafil has been busy recruiting volunteers for a phase three clinical trial which they hope will show the drug to be both effective and safe. The trial that is being conducted in a double blind, randomised, placebo controlled format will be specifically targeted at man who suffer from erectile dysfunction and will lay the groundwork for more phase three studies of avanafil.

In all 650 men have been recruited for the study in a $30 million program undertaken in partnership with Deerfield Management. Doctor Charles Bowden from VIVUS explained that it was not difficult to find volunteers to take part in this study and they came forward at a “rapid rate”. Forty different locations are being used in different American states and it is expected that the results should be available fully by the middle of 2010.
The Food & Drug Administration in America requires a lot of safety and effectiveness clinical trials to be submitted to them before any approval is forthcoming and that is why the FDA is one of the most respected health and drug authorities in the world. The erectile dysfunction medications Viagra, Cialis and Levitra were tested for many years before getting the green light from the FDA.
Avanafil is an exciting drug in the world of erectile dysfunction medications but it is not really much different from the trio of medications Viagra, Cialis and Levitra in that it is a PDE-5 inhibitor. VIVUS claim that in their clinical trials avanafil works faster than the others and that its side effects are considerably less apparent too.
Avanafil is unlikely to be available commercially in pharmacies for at least a couple of years. Ukmedix News will be looking for updates and any new information on this erectile dysfunction drug.

It should be noted these are planned trials. The FDA has not requested anything extra. Avanafil won't shake up the ED world but should capture a nice share from those wanting a more on-demand treatment without the side effects of the others.

I hope avanafil gets approved soon, but Zoraxel is the new ED drug I'm really looking forward to.
