The use of the drug atorvastatin to remedy serum cholesterol levels in men who are suffering from hypercholesterolemia was recently the subject of a new clinical trial. Interestingly the results clearly showed that erectile function was significantly improved with the atorvastatin and not only this but the effect of Viagra was also improved too.

The research which was undertaken in Turkey looked at 25 men suffering from hypercholesterolemia which was defined as having a serum cholesterol amount of more than 200 mg/dL. In the study the hypercholesterolemia was the only risk factor for erectile dysfunction in all the men. The volunteers were asked to take Viagra one hour before attempting sexual intercourse over a four week time period.
After a four week trial the men were given a single 10mg dose of the drug atorvastatin daily for a month. After this four weeks of only taking the atorvastatin drug, combination therapies of both the drugs were administered for a further four weeks.
Careful records of erectile dysfunction scores using the International Index of Erectile Function method were kept and it was seen that after all the treatments erectile function was significantly better. The best results were achieved with the combination therapy, the second best figures were achieved with the use of Viagra alone and the third best results were recorded with the atorvastatin alone. All of the results however were significantly better than previous scores recorded before the clinical trial.
The full results of this new research have been printed in the Scandinavian Journal of Urology and Nephrology and could open up new avenues of health care for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. The research also highlights the importance for men suffering from erectile dysfunction of having good cholesterol levels. Erectile dysfunction is usually caused by underlying factors such as obesity, poor health from smoking, heart disease and from what has been made very clear by this research, hypercholesterolemia.
