It is a coomon medical phenomenon that when people undergo weight loss surgery sometimes they also tend to lose their hair but before you worry too much, the hair loss tends to be just slight and temporary and only in rare cases is the hair loss acute. Both bariatric surgeons and hair loss surgeons are aware of this and say that often people with severe cases of hair loss opt for surgery to replace the missing hair follicles.
Hair loss of different severities occurs in around 50% of all weight loss surgery patients and is primarily caused by a lack of vitamin or minerals. Fat is fullof hormones and suddenly reducing the amount of fat in the body can therefore trigger hair loss. Usually the hair loss is not immediately evident after the weight loss surgery but appears after about 6 to 8 months later when the weight is really beginning to fall off. The hair loss can be distressing becuase it falls of in big amounts and leaves unsightly bald patches all over the scalp.
Being aware of this problem helps because it means that special diets can be formulated to make sure that good nutrition and all the right vitamins are present to stop or at least slow the hair loss. The diets don't alway work with all people but they can be effective with some of the patients and this means they don't have to undergo expensive hair restoration surgery.
Many different things can cause hair loss and weight loss surgery is just one of them. Women tend to be more susceptible to hair loss due to hormone imbalances and often suffer hair loss when they give birth and when they use birth control pills. Men tend to suffer from more natural hair loss but it is very normal and is called Male Pattern Baldness which can sometimes be corrected using drugs like Propecia or Minoxidil.
