When observing the array of hair loss products on the market and especially on the internet things can get confusing. Some of the claims made by product manufacturers are outrageous and make claims that are misleading and even dishonest sometimes. The more serious and likely to work products tend to make simple and factual claims that are backed by scientific research and have drug authority approvals.
The two most likely to work and commonly known medications for hair loss are Propecia and Rogaine. The both work by blocking DHT, a hormone that is formed from excess testosterone in the scalp. Rogaine has an active ingredient called minoxidil and comes in the form of a lotion that must be applied directly to the scalp. Propecia's active ingredient is finasteride and it is prescribed in the form of a small tablet that must be taken once daily. Some trichologist recommend the use of both the minoxidil and the finasteride for best results.
Other remedies for hair loss are often bogus and don't really work. However a few natural products have been seen to give good results. One such product is saw palmetto which has been shown to give some results in clinical testing and it works in the same way as the previously mentioned Propecia and Rogaine, by blocking the DHT formation. Saw palmetto is available over the counter and therefore doesn't need a prescription. Saw palmetto works well with the use of betasitosterol, (a plant sterol) which can also be bought without prescription.
Recently research undertaken in Japan with a compound called procyandin that is present in apples showed good results with the men who used it saying that they had a rise in the number of hairs on their scalps after its use. The researcher also used a placebo group alongside the men who were given the apple extract.
Some studies have also shown that the use of a healthy diet and maintainly a clean and healthy head of hair can nelp to preserve the hair on your head and to stop hair loss. Vitamins can help to maintain hair but will not actually grow hair by merely make up for a lack of vitamins that is an actual cause of hair loss.
