Probably the most famous person in the UK to suffer from serious hair loss is Gail Porter. She has suffered and continues to suffer from alopecia that is caused by stress that in turn causes the immune system to malfunction and rid the body of hair. Recently however the stress that she has suffered from is lessening as she is over her depression and is in a stable relationship and this has seen her immune system start to function normally and her hair has started to grow back.
The UK TV presenter who hails from Edinburgh has said publicly that her hair has been growing back now for around 4 months. She now claims to have about 80% of her scalp covered in hair just leaving four small bald patches that she hopes will soon disappear too. She said that until her hair is 100% growing back she will carry on shaving her head and she warned people that until it does get to 100% there is still a chance that it will never fully grow back.
Unlike many women who suffer from hair loss Gail Porter decided not to cover up and either wear a wig or wear a hat but to be seen bald in public. She has since made a documentary about what it was like for a woman to go bald and be open with it.
Female hair loss is normally much more stressful than the majority of hair loss that men suffer from namely male pattern balding. Alopecia totalis which is what Gail Porter suffers from is completely different to the problem that men have when their hair starts to thin. Male pattern hair loss is caused not by the immune system but by the build up of dihydrotestosterone in the scalp and can happen to all men on reaching full puberty.
Ukmedix advises all men to go and get a consultation online or otherwise if they are losing their hair, as it is important to establish that their hair loss is caused by the male pattern balding gene and not by stress or some other cause.
