One of our reporters at Ukmedix has been following the story of John Mangan who suffered terrible burns to his head when he was trapped at a fire in a rock concert in Ireland. He was in fact among the lucky few who escaped with their lives as over 100 people died in the fire.
While he regained his life he did not regain his hair as he suffered burns on his scalp, hands and shoulders that means that in these places hair will not grow. That’s not really a problem for the shoulders and hands but John really missed his blond hair following his accident and was prepared to go to great lengths to get it back.
The most obvious treatment would have been to have a hair transplant where hair is taken from the sides of the head in individual follicles and placed on the top of the head. However in John’s case this was not possible because the extensive burns on top of his head meant that he only had one layer of skin on his scalp instead of the usual 5 layers. Doctors and hair transplant specialists ruled out having a hair transplant as a result.
However one surgeon called DiStefano reckoned he could do something for John by using a new groundbreaking surgical treatment called the ‘Triple-flap procedure that was pioneered by a Dr Frechett from France. The procedure is complicated and time consuming but is effective as it involves using parts of your scalp that are still growing hair and having it stretched over the top of your head. The procedure usually involves number of operations top get a good result and obviously is painful at times for the patient but provided a good surgeon is used then the results can be well worth the hassle.
This type of hair surgery is far more complicated than the standard hair transplant because it involved the actual removal of parts of the scalp and not merely the transplanting of hair follicles but it is the only method of treatment available to some men who have suffered damage to their scalps like John Mangan. John is making good progress and happy to see hair on his head again.
At Ukmedix we are more concerned with non-surgical methods of hair restoration and our doctors may be able to prescribe the hair loss drug finasteride for you that goes by the name of Propecia.
