Scientists in America have been studying the effect that stress can have on people physically and their results show that stress alone can cause skin problems and hair loss. It is common knowledge that people who are very stressed do not look well and are more likely to suffer from health problems however this new study shows exactly how stress connects to hair loss.

The scientists noted that when a person is very stressed a hormone called cortisol is produced in greater quantities. This in turn triggers off an increase in the production of oil through the skin which can create skin problems such as acne and aggravate dandruff on the scalp.
If you are presently suffering from male pattern baldness the last thing you need is unhealthy skin on your scalp. You must try to keep your hair clean at all times so that individual hair follicles do not come under any more stress.
The researchers saw that when people were calm, for example after a holiday, the skin on a person’s forearm would recover more quickly after cellophane was pulled off it. When the volunteers were very stressed for example after a bad day at work the cellophane tape would aggravate the skin far more.
The head of the team of scientists Dr Flor Mayoral from the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami analysed 27 students who volunteered for this research. This study is the first occasion that it has been conclusively proven that stress can have an effect on the skin even though dermatologists say that they have known this for years.
Doctor Mayoral also said that it was likely that people who had existing skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis would be far more likely to suffer adversely from stress. This may also mean that they would be more probable to suffer from stress related hair loss too.
