Tricologists all over the world are beginning to notice a worrying trend which is that women and men are losing their hair more often than before, with the biggest increase being seen in female hair loss. It seems that those women who have seen the fastest increase in hair loss are those in their twenties who lead stressful and busy lives in the office.
Female hair loss tends to fall into 2 different categories, the most common being telogen effluvium which is observed after the birth of children or when under alot of stress. This tends to be a uniform thinning of the hair and is normally temporary and goes away normally. However the 2nd category is the one in which the rising numbers are more noticeable with more women suffering from male pattern baldness. It appears that about 50% of all women who suffer from hair loss are suffering from male pattern baldness.
Male pattern baldness can occur in women for the same reason as it occurs in men namely the build up of testosterone which turns into DHT in the scalp which in turn attacks and weakens hair follicles. This process is extremely rare in women and it obviously affects far more men than women.
The best advice for women who start to observe hair loss is to visit a doctor immediately as finding the root cause of the hair loss is essentiual for its treatment and cure. The earlier you detect the hair loss the better and often only the woman herself will be aware of her hair loss. In fact people with thick hair often have to lose up to half of its thickness before it becomes noticeable.
A good trichologist should be able to diagnose hair loss accurately and evaluate the cause.
