A real man doesn't spend too much time and money on his appearance...., at least that's what men say, however the financial figures from the industry say the opposite. In fact in the United States the skin care industry for men is worth a cool seven billion. Unlike women however, who are happy to discuss the latest beauty products and tips men don't like to talk about the effort that they go into to look good and to keep themselved looking groomed.
Another multi billion dollar men's industry in the United States and in Europe is hair loss. Men are prepared to spend a good chunk of what they earn to restore their hair to its proper thickness. One of the biggest selling hair loss drugs is Propecia made by Merck. Propecia is traken in the form of a single tablet daily and is considered to be one of the more effective remedies for hair restoration. It functions by blocking the DHT that forms in the scalp of men with high levels of testosterone. With estimates of up to 20 million men in the US suffering from hair loss you can see why the hair loss business is a big one.
The only other drug licenced by the FDA in the States is minoxidil, a liquid solution that can be applied to the scalp and does the same as Propecia by blocking the hair loss causing compound DHT. There are a lot of wild and unfounded theories as to what causes hair loss and what do do about it. Many peeople say that you inherit your hair loss from your mother's genes, however this can not always be seen to be so, but there is no doubt that hair loss is heriditary to some extent. Another theory that is said to help is drinking wine in moderation as it can stop the process of the liver producing too much estrogen.
Another big industry for men's care are products for the removal of unwanted hair. It is obviously easier to remove hair than to grow it and special lasers can be utilised to remove hair from your back and other places that are deemed to be unattractive. The hair removal industry for women is substantially bigger and the men's market is only just beginning to catch on.
Industry and trend analysts predict that the smaller size of the men's personal grooming and beauty products market is going to grow more quickly than the women's industry as men become more concious of their appearances and women become more demanding of the appearances of their men.
