Hair Loss Myths

In normal conversation people iften pick up hair loss tips and advice which are basically false. The vast selection of hair improvement products that are seen in shops can actually do more harm then good and so great care must be taken before using them. Sometimes while a product may appear to be making the hair look healthy it is in fact damaging it. It is important to know what is harming hair and what is helping the hair stay healthy. Lots of different factors can cause hair loss with the majority of them due to ilness, heriditary factors as well as hair care and beauty practices.

One oft heard statement is that dandruff can cause hair loss. Dandruff is a fungus called malazzesia globosa which causes the scalp to itch and the skin on the scalp to flake away. Dandruff can't really be cured completely but regular shampooing with a good anti dandruff shampoo can get rid of the problem. The dandruff itself does not relly cause hair loss but the scratching that accompanies it can damage the hair follicles and cause the scalp to get inflamed.

The scratching also damages the hair as well as the scalp and leaves the individual hairs weakened due to the removal of the cuticular scales that cover hair and this means that it is more likely to fall out. Dandruff shampoos often have zinc pyrithione as the active ingredient, which removes the dead skin and protects the scalp from further regrowing of the dandruff fungus.

Another common scalp problem is seborrheic dermatitis which causes a red sore scalp and scales to form. The medicines that are given to people to cure it are sometimes considered to be bad for the hair and so some people decide to live with the itchy scalp in the misconception that they will be damaging their hair if they use the products. However this is not the case as shampoos that are prescribed for this condition are effective on the scalp and clean the hair like normal over the counter shampoos. The scalp being healthy anf fungus free leads to healthy hair and a prevention of the damaging scratching that can cause hair loss.

Another hair problem is the one of colouring. As men and women age the melanin that creates hair colour starts to fade and the hair goes grey or white. MAny people dye their hair to stay looking young. As the hair get older it is likely to get thinner and weaker so that the hair follicles are likely to react badly to the chemical in the hair colouring products. Continued use of hair dye on hair can cause damage especially in older people and so dying is best left to a minimum.

Blow drying hair make the hair look healthy and fuller and is used by many people to keep their hair looking good. However the blow drying of hair can actually remove the moisture from the hair and make the brittle and likely to break. Care must be taken not to blow dry on a regular basis and even when drying the hair care must be taken to be gentle and careful. It is much better to let hair dry naturally than to blow dry it.

Overall be sensible which what you put in your hair and always remember that the hair is alive and is susceptible to reaction with whatever you put on it. Advice from a trained trichologist should be sought in the event of hair loss.
