The owner of the erectile dysfunction drug Cialis , Eli Lilly & Co have reported profits that are down by 39 percent from the same quarter last year. While that may not look good from a financial point of view most of the profit reduction was due to the extraordinary expenses involved with the purchase of ICOS that owned the other half of the Cialis drug.

Eli Lilly bought ICOS for $2.3 billion at the beginning of 2007 after a long drawn out battle which had some of the ICOS shareholders not wanting to sell as they believed that the Cialis drug was worth much more than Eli Lilly was offering especially as it is the second best selling erectile dysfunction drug in the world and also the drug whose market share is growing the fastest.

Eli Lilly sold $193.1 million worth of Cialis which was not as good as hoped. This is mainly because of the new policy of Medicare, an American health insurance program not to pay for the Cialis drug.  Previously Medicare paid up for the Cialis drug for old people who could not afford it but following a change in policy it has been decided that the erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are not essential drugs and therefore will not be paid for. 

Some market analysts argue that Cialis is without a doubt the best erectile dysfunction drug on the market because unlike Viagra and Levitra it works for well over four hours. Cialis which is known as the weekend drug in France works for 36 hours meaning that if you take one on a Friday night you will still have enhanced erectile function on Sunday morning.

The clinical name for Cialis is Tadalafil and it works as a PDE-5 inhibitor in exactly the same way as Viagra and Levitra do.
