There have been many antismoking advertisements put out by various government departments however they have only had limited success in persuading smokers to quit. What many people don’t understand is that smokers are often in complete denial of the dangers of their smoking habit and therefore they choose to shut out any information about health risks.
Peer pressure can play a big part here because if you are the only one of a group of friends who have all quit then you will feel ostracised. There is a great comfort in numbers and so if all of your friends are smokers you will find it easier to convince yourself that it can’t be that bad for you if “everybody’s doing it”.
At Ukmedix News we have seen research showing that the social aspects of smoking can have a big impact on whether you quit or not. If it is fashionable among your group of friends to smoke it will be much more difficult for you to quit whereas if your friends are all quitting and you are the one who must again stand outside on your own to light up it’ll be much easier to give up.
At Ukmedix News we believe that the most effective message to convince people to quit is to highlight the regrets that sick and dying smokers have. People who have become sick as a result of smoking wish they had never lit up that first cigarette, but by this time……IT’S JUST TOO LATE!!!
