A new research report has confirmed the link between the risk of impotence and smoking. The study which involved nearly 5,000 Chinese men between the age of 35 and 74 saw a clear link between the amount of cigarettes smoked and the chances of them suffering from erectile dysfunction.

The lead author of the study Dr Jiang He from the Tulane University School of Public Health based in New Orleans said that he and his team were aware that the link between cigarettes and erectile dysfunction had already been proved in other studies however in these other studies the men who were examined also tended to have either hypertension, diabetes or heart disease. Dr Jiang He said that in this new study all of the men who were examined were otherwise completely healthy and so the likelihood of their erectile dysfunction being due to smoking was more clinically accurate.
The results showed that otherwise healthy men who smoked had an average of a 41 percent greater chance of suffering from erectile dysfunction when compared to those men who did not smoke. This is interesting reading because some men who smoke and feel that they are completely healthy would therefore assume that they have no real concerns when it comes to erectile dysfunction. They would probably blame erectile dysfunction on other things such as high blood pressure or heart disease but the study clearly proves that smoking and erectile dysfunction are linked irrespective of any other medical condition.
The researchers also saw that there was a definite “dose-response” relationship meaning that the more that the men smoked the greater the chances of suffering from impotence were. The American Journal of Epidemiology where the results of the study were published stated that men who smoked up to ten cigarettes a day had a 27 percent greater chance of erectile dysfunction; those men who smoked between eleven to twenty cigarettes a day had a 45 percent greater liklihood of erectile dysfunction and those men who smoked over twenty cigarettes a day had a whopping 65 percent bigger chance of experiencing erectile dysfunction.
Hey guys, you sure you want to carry on lighting up?
