One of the best things to do is to choose a date sometime in the future (ideally two or three weeks ahead) so that you can focus your mind and prepare for your quitting smoking attempt. The idea is that this will enable you to remove situations from your daily routine which could act as triggers to make you smoke. Identify places and situations where you are likely to smoke and if necessary to avoid them for a few days to give yourself a head start. You will eventually have to face for example a smoky bar but hopefully by this time you will be strong enough to resist lighting up.
Another very important thing to do is to ask yourself exactly why you are giving up smoking and it is important that you remind yourselfon a regular basis why you are quitting. You should write down the list of reasons on a piece of paper that you keep handy with you all the time. When you are tempted to have a cigarette take this piece of paper out of your pocket or your wallet and go through it again.
It is also good idea to write down things with which you are going to replace your smoking habit. You might for example take up exercise or some hobby to replace it.
Another very effective way to quit smoking is to get a “No Smoking Buddy”. Having somebody to quit with is a good idea as you can help each other through difficult patches and also if you do decide to smoke you will feel that you are not only letting yourself down but also your friend.
