Smokers In Danger When Undergoing Routine Surgery

Medical research done in Canada by The Ontario Anesthesiologists highlights the huge danger that continuing to smoke before undergoing surgery brings on. Their study shows that smokers face much higher chances of infection, higher readmission rates and longer recovery times.

The Ontario Anesthesiologists recently launched a campaign called Stop Smoking for Safer Surgery which was designed to let smokers know exactly how dangerous it was for them to continue with their habit before surgery. The campaign had five objectives which were to:

1.      Properly identify smokers who were on the list for surgery.
2.      Spell out the extra risks and likely complications before and after surgery.
3.      Refer all smokers to a smoking cessation agency or clinic.
4.      Collect information about the patients' smoking habits and medical history before and after the surgery.
5.      To try and flush out toxins caused by tobacco prior to surgery.

Some primary statistics revealed by the Ontario Anesthesiologists show that those people who quit smoking completely 6 to 8 weeks prior to their surgery were released after eleven days compared to thirteen days for those smokers who just cut down the number of cigarettes that they smoked.

They also noted that less than twenty percent of those people who quit before surgery had difficulty in breathing after surgery compared to almost half for those who did not quit. More than half of the smokers were reported as having surgical complications compared to only eighteen percent of those who quit.

What this makes clear is that smoking drastically hinders the human body's natural recovery ability and that this is another way that smoking can kill.  We honestly believe at Ukmedix News that if men and women were truly aware of the harm that smoking was causing them they would not continue to smoke. Many smokers delude themselves into thinking that smoking isn't really that bad for them when it is without a doubt the most dangerous thing they can do and the most likely thing to kill them.
