Robert Downey Jr Joining The Denial Club

Written by Rupert Kircz| Thursday, 05 March 2009| There are 13 comments

smoking was the most stupid thing he ever did in his whole life....

The actor Robert Downey Jr. is still smoking heavily despite having given up a whole list of other addictions. The movie star who is famous for films such as Tropic Thunder and Iron Man claims that he has no intention of quitting smoking for the meantime.

robert downey jr joining the denial club

Robert who is 43 years old has quit smoking previously for a short time but was quoted as saying and he wasn't sure that it was necessarily better not to smoke! Hmmm, if Robert genuinely believes that smoking is doing him no harm he is either far cleverer than the whole of the medical establishment put together or he is joining the ranks of other celebrities like Kate Moss and Patrick Swayze who going to the denial mode in order to justify their smoking habit. Robert explained that he did a lot of weight lifting and martial arts, that he had personal trainers and went running as if somehow this would negate the cancerous and general debilitating effects of cigarettes.

If you ever want to fully understand the powerful addiction that cigarettes can produce over people you only need to see and hear a smoker in denial such as Robert. Despite his friend Patrick Swayze being close to death from cancer of the pancreas which is directly linked to smoking, Roberts is still being flippant and nonchalant about his smoking habit and its dangers.

The sad fact is that when Patrick Swayze is all alone he must regret smoking terribly. Maybe his pride won't allow him to admit it to anyone else but he would give everything he owned if he could replay his life and quit smoking.

When Robert Downey Jr is on his deathbed from a smoking related disease he will regret smoking terribly.  He will realise that by trying to be cool and giving off the impression that he couldn't give a damn about smoking was the most stupid thing he ever did in his whole life.

If you are a smoker the only time to quit is right now.

My dad quit smoking in 1986, decided to live a healthy life, ran marathons, and the lung cancer still got him, we lost him in 2007. He regretted smoking... he was 52 years old when he died.

Did you know that smoking can cause heart problems and aneurysms? My husband did not know that and has recently had two major surgeries, a quadruple heart bypass and an open stomach surgery for removal of an aneruysym. Doctors told him that this was caused primarily from smoking. Smoking also causes your blood vessels to constrict and weaken. My husband said that if he had know this he never would have been smoking. At one point he went into cardiac arrest. What more reason is needed to quit smoking???

I agree that smoking does you no good, but it's their choice and it's not affecting you. Leave Patrick alone, the poor man is very sick. If that's what makes him happy right now, let him smoke. And let's not envision people on their deathbeds, hmm? Thanks.

Smoking cigarettes keeps him from smoking all the crack he used to smoke. He's so fucked up already, he's still not gonna be around all that long. At least smoking cigarettes and not crack lets us watch him be hot for awhile longer.

I think this article is disingenuous. A genuine medical article would recognise that neither Robert Downey Jr nor Patrick Swayze are smoking because they think it makes them look "cool" or "tough" - they're smoking because they're addicts. In Downey Jr's case, this is particularly noteworthy - when you consider the other forms of addiction he has successfully kicked, smoking is probably the least lethal. Is smoking dangerous? Absolutely. Would he be healthier if he quit? Almost definitely. But stop judging them unless you have been through what they're going through.

This article reads like it was written by a high school kid the night before an assessment deadline.
