As well as the thousands of different illnesses that smoking brings on and aggravates, new research has shown that smokers get less sleep than nonsmokers which can lead to associated health problems in the long term.

A new study done in Japan by the Doshisha University in Kyoto shows that smokers who get through a packet of cigarettes daily get on average 10 minutes less sleep nightly when compared to non-smokers. The researchers also showed that the smokers on average woke up one and a half times more often during the night compared to those who didn't smoke.
This new study involved asking detailed questions about sleep to almost 3,300 men between the age of 30 and 59 years and the results were made public at the Sixth World Congress of the World Sleep Federation.
It was also suggested by the United States National Sleep Foundation that the nicotine found in tobacco could aggravate nightmares and even cause problems with waking up. It has also been seen that smokers are more likely to snore and suffer from sleep apnea which again impacts not only on individual quality of sleep but also on your partners sleep quality.
Smoking is a vicious circle because those individuals who get poor sleep as a result of smoking will probably turn to cigarettes during the day to keep themselves awake which in turn will prevent them from getting a good night's sleep later on. Smokers often appear to be tired, lethargic and are much less likely to do exercise which in itself helps you to get good sleep.
At Ukmedix News it amazes us sometimes to think that smoking messes up practically every single aspect of your life. Whether it's your health, your productivity, your fertility or your sex life, smoking will eventually do some damage to it and now this latest research shows that smoking is even messing up your life when you are not even awake!
