Once A Smoker, Always A Smoker

after all they have beaten the habit...

For many men and women who have quit smoking the battle continues for the rest of their lives. Their smoking habit is only just beneath the surface waiting to come up and take hold of their lives at any point. Ex smokers need to be vigilant and always on the guard for triggers that could set them spiralling down into their smoking habit again.

Once A Smoker, Always A Smoker

One of the most dangerous times for ex smokers is just after a year of being smoke free. There is that proud confident feeling that you have beaten your smoking habit and that you are now the master of your addiction. However this overconfidence is very often what gets people smoking again. They feel that they can have just the one and it wont make any difference because after all they have beaten the habit.

This is dangerous as your brain pathways which give you that sense of satisfaction from smoking will immediately light up again and create a chronic addictive pull. They say that while you may have completely forgotten about smoking your brain never forgets and it only needs one puff  to open up all the addictive cravings again.

If you are an ex-smoker you should treat your old addiction in the same way that alcoholics treat alcohol. You must accept that you can never go back even for just the one. You should be especially wary of going to smoky bars and nightclubs as the second hand smoke can trigger off smoking cravings.

At Ukmedix News we have spoken to reformed smokers who claim that after being in a smoky nightclub they dream of having smoked a cigarette and even sometimes wake up in the morning craving one.

There may be those few individuals who can have the odd cigarette without fear of addiction but these are people who have never been properly addicted to cigarettes. Never ever believe that you can go from being a full on heavy smoker to a person who has two or three cigarettes a week.

Remember that smoking again could end up killing you.
