Researchers have discovered that many women who continue to smoke while pregnant could be doing so because they have a particular gene which makes it far harder for them to quit the habit.

The study which was done by the University of Bristol and the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter made use of data on almost 2,500 female smokers who found themselves pregnant. They observed that those women who had the particular gene were 2/3 more likely to continue to smoke and be unable to quit when pregnant.
Despite the huge amount of evidence which shows that women who smoke significantly raise the chances of themselves having premature births, stillbirths and underweight children they continue to smoke. Even though there is a huge amount of social pressure and even embarrassment on their own part when they light up some women still find it almost impossible to quit.
Evidence and research like this underlines why people should never start smoking in the first place and shows how the powerful addictive nature of cigarettes can make otherwise normally rational and caring people do things which are harmful to their children. Smoking when pregnant even raises the chances of cot death 3 times.
The researchers were quick to point out however that expectant mothers could not and must not use this research as an excuse not to quit believing that they had this addictive gene, because many mothers with it did manage to quit and stay off cigarettes completely.
At Ukmedix News we fully understand the addictive power of smoking having seen numerous research projects which show that even when imminent death from the habit is outlined to smokers they continue to light up. If you are a committed smoker who wants to quit but finds it impossible you must seek medical help because there are numerous remedies which really can make the difference between failure and success.
