The American Food & Drug Administration has ruled that the smoking cessation drug Champix should have a labeling change to reflect concerns that it could be possibly linked to depression and suicidal thoughts.

The FDA said that the new labels would 'highlight the risk of ....changes in behaviour, depressed mood, hostility, and suicidal thoughts'. The FDA also noted however that it was important that both doctors and patients of Champix were aware of the considerable benefits compared to the risk of taking the medication.
Ms. Janet Woodcock who is the director at FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research explained that the significant health benefits of not smoking should be a factor to take into account when deciding to use Champix.
Ms. Woodcock's statement highlights a consideration which many people who decide not to use Champix overlook. It should always be remembered that continuing to smoke has huge side effects many of which are fatal such as lung cancer, heart disease and the aggravation of practically every single illness known to man. Using Champix as a means of quitting smoking should be considered as way of improving your health and lowering the risk of you suffering from early death.
It must also be remembered that individuals who are quitting smoking are under a alot of stress and anxiety due to the acute withdrawal symptoms and therefore this could in itself aggravate psychological conditions which needs to be taken into account. Champix is a prescription drug and you should always carefully read the labeling and take the advice of your doctor before using it.
Champix which is made by the drug giant Pfizer has been shown in many clinical trials to statistically increase the chances of success when used in a smoking cessation attempts.
