Speaking to anti-smoking experts about which is the best way to quit smoking always seems to elicit different answers. Some smoking cessation experts say that the best way forward is simply to go cold turkey and quit without the use of medications or nicotine replacement therapy and a whole lot of other experts will swear that smoking cessation aids significantly increase the chances of success.

That is why at Ukmedix News we believe in the simple phrase “Do It Your Way” and have written extensively about this. No two smokers are the same and every single ex-smoker will have a different tale to tell.

For example researchers from Sydney University claim that simple willpower was enough to get people to quit smoking and that the value of nicotine patches and drugs like Champix should not be overrated. At the same time Ms. Amanda Sandford from the anti smoking organisation Ash claimed that there was a lot of value in smoking cessation aids and that the evidence was clear that those who relied on willpower alone were not “terribly successful”. She made the point that individuals dealt with their addiction “in different ways.”

A Department of Health spokesman said that smokers who tried to give up without help are “significantly less likely to quit” compared to those who have support. In fact they said that the ‘unsupported quit rate’ stands at around 4% after one year and this number doubles with smoking cessation medications. The Department of Health said that when a smoker makes use of both medication and behavioural support the quit rate is quadrupled.

We know how effective counseling can be because many ex smokers have written to us and said how inspirational and motivating reading articles about quitting smoking on the Ukmedix News site can be. If you are in the process of quitting smoking there’s no harm in reading one article a day, it could make the difference between success and failure!

OK OK, who is an anti-smoking expert!?! what a ridiculous title...surely theyre just ex smokers who managed to give up!! So that makes me a soking cessation expert and therefore that makes my point a valid point that to give up you have to go cold turkey. One day 20, one day none.

this cut down BS is rubbish!

Gravy,

it may be true that anyone who gives up smoking is an expert but it doesnt mean that the way you did it would work for everyone. And on that point, i totally agree with this article..for me, I need to use the help of strong medications, Champix is currently working for me. Fingers crossed, I become an expert too!
