You may have come across reports that the smoking cessation medication Champix (known as Chantix in the United States) is being examined by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration leading on from reports that some patients have been experiencing worrying side effects. The head of the FDA’s Centre for Drug Evaluation and Research, Janet Woodcock said that they will be reviewing all of the cases of side effects in line with good practice.

Miss Woodcock noted that it has not been established in any of the incidences whether the Champix smoking cessation drug was actually the cause of any of the medical complications that were reported. The FDA therefore will be using its researchers and scientists to look at all the individual cases so that if there is a link between the smoking cessation drug and any of the reported health problems clearer warnings can be established.

For example in America alone over 5 million individuals have received prescriptions for the Champix medication and the FDA has received around 3,000 reports of adverse effects. This means that only 0.06% of people had problems with the Champix drug and on the labelling for the Champix medication the side effects are listed and therefore it is expected that a very small proportion of individuals will suffer adverse health events.

It should also be noted that people who are quitting smoking experience great changes in their bodies and therefore some of the psychiatric problems associated with the use of Champix maybe just due to the stress of the withdrawal symptoms and the stress of giving up nicotine.
