Smoking Becomes Uncool

By 1948 more than 80 percent of all men in the United Kingdom smoked

There was an era when it was very fashionable to smoke cigarettes and in fact you would probably have looked out of place if you didn’t smoke. In the 20th Century all over America and Europe people were encouraged to smoke not only by advertisements but also by their friends and parents. The older generation often talk about the fact that they were given their first cigarettes by their parents or by a responsible adult. The idea of parents giving children cigarettes now is almost unheard of.

Smoking Becomes Uncool

The good news for most countries is that smoking is now becoming extremely unfashionable. While younger people may get away with smoking at parties anyone smoking over the age of 30 begins to look like a bit of a loser and is obviously only smoking because of an intense addiction to nicotine as opposed to a passing desire to light up.

Cigarettes have killed millions of men and women all over the globe since they were first invented. Previously smoking had been something which was a bit of a curiosity involving expensive cigars and pipes but with the onset of industrialisation in America and Europe cigarette machines were invented which could churn out thousands of cigarettes every hour which greatly brought down their cost and allowed the common man to smoke cheaply and easily.

By 1948 more than 80 percent of all men in the United Kingdom smoked cigarettes and it wasn’t until the 1950’s that the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer was conclusively proven. After this the number of people smoking started to fall but it was not until the 1980’s that people really started to become aware of the hundreds of different health conditions that could be aggravated by smoking.

In this day and age there is really no excuse for starting smoking and for continuing to light up. The evidence is so greatly in favour of quitting that continuing to smoke is just plain stupid. Take the bull by the horns and stop now! Don’t let your death become another smoking statistic.
