Everyone in New York City is chatting about a new anti smoking advert that is being shown on TV. The advertisement that was made in Australia and used in the country too is groundbreaking in that it is extremely graphic and extremely shocking. In fact the New York state sensors decided to give the advertisement an M-rating which meant that it could only be shown at certain times so as not to cause offence.

One scene in the TV advert shows a carotid artery from the neck of a patient being unblocked of fatty substances which have built up due to smoking. The adverts are designed to completely unglamorise smoking and make people who smoke think twice about lighting up again. One New York newspaper said that the advertisements were “the most shocking” ever seen on television in America and that they were more shocking than many sex scenes seen on TV today.
The anti smoking lobby in America has declared an all out war against smoking. America is one of the few nations to have won multi million dollar legal settlements from the tobacco companies for encouraging people to smoke. The Mayor of New York Mr. Bloomberg has also committed himself to getting the city completely smoke free.
As well as obviously making the world a better place to habit there is a huge financial incentive for governments to encourage smoking cessation campaigns as so much of the sickness that people suffer from in hospitals is due to smoking related diseases. For example 90 percent of all lung cancer cases appear in people who smoke or used to smoke and therefore by the simple fact of lowering the consumption of cigarettes in a nation the numbers of people entering hospital for chemotherapy should go down also.
