Research done in Hong Kong University has shown that it is never too late to quit your deadly smoking habit and that the immediate health benefits of quitting even for people who have smoked for decades are considerable. Some people believe that elderly people should not quit smoking because their bodies have become so used to the nicotine and the tar that by quitting at say over the age of 60 can in fact be more detrimental to their health and can actually kill them. This research project has challenged these misconceptions and shown that elderly people do not suffer from any adverse effects by quitting and in fact the opposite applies almost immediately.

In all the researchers examined data and looked at the death risk of some 56,000 smokers and non smokers over the age of 65. The statistics clearly showed that elderly smokers had a higher risk of dying from heart disease, cancer and lung disease when compared to elderly non smokers. It was seen also that elderly ex smokers had a higher risk of death from cancer than people who had never smoked, but those elderly people who continue to smoke were twice as likely to die from cancer as opposed to the ex smokers. The risk of heart disease was also around 50 percent higher for those people who continue to smoke in old age compared to those who had never smoked and 25 percent higher for those who used to smoke but had now quit.
Also bear in mind that the chances of them having a healthy retirement and not dying a slow and painful death are much increased if they quit smoking at any age. The ability of the body to regenerate and recuperate is much reduced as you get older and therefore it is imperative for older people to quit smoking if they want to live their retirement healthily.
The longer you wait before you quit smoking the higher the chances are that you will die from its effects. There is no time like the present so sort it out and quit now.
