Quitting smoking is not easy and therefore should not be treated lightly. Before you quit smoking there are some things that you can do to improve your likliehood of success. For example it is important to ask yourself why you are quitting smoking and to focus on this so that you know what your final goal are and why you are doing it. Research shows that giving up smoking because family members or friends are hassling you to do so is not a very good reason to quit. You really must want to quit for yourself and be convinced that it is right thing for you to do.

You should pick a good time to quit smoking. It is no point trying to quit just before a boozy wedding or when you are meeting a group of smoking friends because the chances are you will fail. Try to pick a time which gives you a couple of weeks of stress free relaxing time where you are unlikely to be placed in tempting situations.
When you quit smoking make sure that your home and place of work become completely smoke free. Throw out the lighters, ashtrays and most importantly all the cigarettes so that if you have a temptation moment you cannot just to reach out and grab a cigarette. Some smokers have said that at times they were very tempted to smoke and even left the house to start walking to a shop to buy a cigarette packet but by the time they arrived there they had convinced themselves that it was the wrong thing to do.
Some people say that when you quit smoking you should make a specific effort to improve your health overall and one way of doing this is by doing a little exercise every day. Exercise has been seen to be an extremely good motivator for mental focus and also should take your mind off smoking cravings. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best things and having a packet of chewing gum on you at all times can just keep your mouth busy when you are suffering from extreme cravings to smoke.
A lot of the desire to smoke is not actually a physical craving but merely a psychological one. Remember this at all times so that you can convince yourself that your body does not really want cigarettes. One simple way of getting rid of psychological smoking cravings is to take the number of deep breaths, breathing out slowly and calmly so that you can focus yourself and get rid of the cravings.
