It is now illegal to light up in a car with children in Louisiana and New York

A sensible initiative which has made its way into legislation in a number of American states is a ban on smoking in cars that contain young children. The first state in America to ban smoking in cars was Arkansas in July, 2006 and following on from this other states and other countries have followed with similar bans. It is now illegal to light up in a car with young children in Louisiana, New York, and Maine as well as in southern Australia and Puerto Rico. It is likely that other countries around the world will follow suit and do the same. People who smoke in their cars and create a lot of second hand smoke in a confined area which is extremely bad for young children.

More and more places are implementing smoking bans in public places and it is likely that in the future even private areas will also be covered by the no smoking rules. This will cause an uproar from smokers who say that they should have the privilege of smoking in private areas and that nobody should tell them what they are permitted or not permitted to do in their own homes, but there is also the need to protect young kids from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.

The more difficult that it is made for smokers to light up the more probable they are to quit the harmful habit and become smoke free. People who have just quit smoking say that the smoking bans made it so much easier for them to go out and enjoy life without being distracted and tempted by the possibility of having a cigarette. Smokers say that sometimes they come home after a night in a bar or restaurant and they realise that at no time did they ever even think about a cigarette because they just didn’t see any or they didn’t see anyone smoking.

At Ukmedix News we feel that the more smoking bans that come in the better. From a national perspective a smoking ban is likely to save governments a lot in health bills as so much illness is smoking related.  For example 90% of all people who suffer from lung cancer are smokers.
