At Ukmedix News we have learnt that people give up smoking for different reasons. The majority of older smokers say that the reason they are quitting is due to concerns about the health whereas younger smokers say that their concerns are focused on the cost of cigarettes and the antisocial smells associated with it. These facts come from a new study done in New York which looked at over 2,000 smokers who attended a special smoking cessation program that went on for six weeks.

The lead researcher, Virginia Reichert said that another major concern of younger smokers was that they would put on weight when they quit the habit; however the older smokers were not so concerned about this. Younger smokers were also more concerned about how they would cope with stress when they quit when compared to the older smokers. Almost a quarter of the younger smokers said that they would be extremely concerned about his social situations where cigarettes were readily available however only seven percent of the older group were concerned about this.
Ms Reichert who presented the results of her research at a meeting organised by the American College of Chest Physicians said that the results showed that individual smoking cessation programs should be tailored to meet the concerns of individual smokers in order to achieve good success results. She went on to say that patients needed to be questioned individually about their smoking habit so that a smoking cessation program could focus on those aspects that were of most concern to them.
One of the most successful smoking cessation treatments is the medication Champix which is made by the drug firm Pfizer. Champix is different to most smoking cessation medications as it is not a nicotine replacement drug but a sophisticated medication that works on receptors located in the brain of the patient that control the desire to smoke.
