was up by almost 30% when compared to the figures for the year before

The good news in the United Kingdom is that the amount of men and women who quit smoking around the implementation of a smoking ban in public places was up by almost 30% when compared to the figures for the year before.

Number Of Quitters On The Increase

According to official government statistics 164,711 individuals quit smoking between the months of April and September 2007. The ban came into effect on July 1st and the government invested heavily in advising people to quit around this time. The statistics also showed that the number of people who attempted, (but didn’t necessarily succeed), to quit smoking in these months was also up by about 30 percent to 327,800.

The people who quit smoking did so in different ways such as using nicotine replacement therapy, the new smoking cessation drug Champix or by just going “cold turkey”. The smoking drug Champix was used by about ten percent of those people who attempted to quit smoking and the majority of people used nicotine replacement patches or chewing gum.

At Ukmedix News we have seen that while one treatment may work very well for a certain person it may not work well for other people. We have seen independent reports which show that statistically the Champix drug is the most effective smoking cessation treatment available on the market today. Champix works by acting on the receptors in the brain which control nicotine addiction.

The Minister for Public Health in the United Kingdom Ms. Dawn Primarolo is said to be extremely pleased with the results of the smoking ban in the United Kingdom and hopes that the number of people quitting smoking will continue to rise.

The ban on smoking in public places means it is easier for ex smokers to go out and enjoy themselves without constantly being reminded and tempted with cigarettes. The ban also means that people who do not smoke do not have to suffer from the unhealthy effects of passive smoking.
